SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS will return to warm up your winter this Saturday 2nd and Sunday August 3rd, 2008. Australia’s much loved festival event will take place at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay and will feature a veritable feast of musical treasures from around the globe.

This year all tickets to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS will be sold online through the ticketing service, Qjump, via www.qjump.com.au. Qjump is a newly launched online ticketing company whose parent company has 7 years experience providing web based ticketing services. Qjump sells tickets for many leading Australian events and venues and its website and custom built hosting environment has been specifically designed to meet the high capacity on-sale demands of events like Splendour. In our efforts to improve and streamline the ticketing process, this year's tickets will be delivered to buyers by email using Qjump's print@home e-ticket. The benefits of this include reducing paper usage, greenhouse gas emissions and ticket scalping as well as reducing the cost of delivery for ticket buyers. Tickets go on sale at www.qjump.com.au from 9am on Thursday 22nd May.

From Akron, Ohio and Bristol, UK to Reykjavik, Iceland and the sunny Gold Coast, here’s a taste of the first acts lined up to thrill at SPLENDOUR 2008.

We are not men. We are d-e-v-o. SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS organisers are thrilled to announce the legendary DEVO as its headline act for Saturday August 2nd. Formed in Akron, Ohio in 1974 by art students Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh, DEVO took its name from their concept of "de-evolution" - the idea that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed. They quickly became a cult sensation, helped in part by their emphasis on highly stylised visuals and groundbreaking music videos directed by Gerald Casale. The band broke through to the mainstream with 1980's Freedom of Choice, which contained the worldwide hit Whip It. Their 1980’s world touring success was accompanied by the hit songs, Beautiful World, Girl U Want and That's Good and as DEVO’s legend grew other bands acknowledged their influence (Nirvana covered Turnaround while Girl U Want has been recorded by Soundgarden, Superchunk, and even Robert Palmer). While DEVO members concentrate on other creative projects, they have continued to bring the De-evolution to the world with semi regular live shows. With a line-up that features original members Bob Mothersbaugh (Bob 1), Bob Casale (Bob 2), Gerald V. Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh and Josh Freese on drums, don’t miss one of new wave’s most innovative bands at SPLENDOUR 2008.

Closing proceedings on Sunday August 3rd is the mighty WOLFMOTHER. Their rise to the top of the Australian music scene is now legendary. But the rest of the world has also taken notice with the band scoring the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance (in 2007) for their song Woman. On July 7, 2007, they performed on the Australian leg of the global Live Earth concerts in Sydney and just two weeks ago played their first gig in nearly a year at the Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane, on the closing night of the Andy Warhol Up Late program. Reportedly recording the follow up to their monster self titled album debut, the trio collectively known as WOLFMOTHER will bring their freaked out jamming, delicate melodies and gallant rock riffage to SPLENDOUR 08.

Ethereal Icelandic sensations SIGUR ROS will make their debut appearance at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS. With four albums so far, (plus one remix album (von brig©£i - recycle bin) and a new album on the way, the band really found their feet with their second album, the masterpiece that is ágætis byrjun (a good beginning). Off the back of live performances that had critics falling over themselves trying to find superlatives to describe them, SIGUR ROS attracted global acclaim in the second half of 2000. Album number four takk… (thanks – released 2005) became the band’s largest selling album to date and charted highly across the globe. Now the band are putting the finishing touches to studio album number five, recorded in New York City. With new material under their belts and a trail of magical music behind them, SIGUR ROS are the must see act of SPLENDOUR 2008.

It’s hard to believe it was more than a decade ago that a Melbourne rockabilly covers outfit called the Runaway Boys wrote a bunch of original tunes and changed their name to THE LIVING END. Ten and a bit years later, that same band have racked up a quintuple-platinum album, two platinum and five gold records, won three ARIA awards, countless other accolades and gathered fans all over the world. What’s more important, while some bands seem old and outdated only two or three years after they start, guitarist Chris Cheney, bass player Scott Owen and “new” drummer Andy Strachan are every bit as exciting a prospect as they were way back when – if you need any convincing, just check them out at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2008. With a string of powerful hits behind them (no need to spell them out!) and a new album being recorded in the US with John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jnr) and mixed by legendary producer Brendan O’Brien, THE LIVING END will be a force to be reckoned with at SPLENDOUR 08.

Flicking through the alphabetised racks of your local CD emporium you’ll find that releases from Australian electro wizards THE PRESETS fit snugly between Pet Shop Boys and Elvis Presley. Could there be some weird universal synergy to this? The strident beat of the heart and the swagger of the hips: it’s at this musical cross point of emotive technological peaks and primal caveman rock that one finds THE PRESETS. The band have recently broken a two-year studio silence with their new single My People, a song that is clearly a call to arms and unmistakably Presets in its sentiment. Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes have come rocketing back into the fray with their current # 1 chart topping sophomore album Apocalypso that ranges from expansive, emotive techno, to future pagan house and choral space funk. With a canny knack for welding hook-laden pop to some of the most singular and exciting sounds of tomorrow, THE PRESETS will trip the light fantastic at SPLENDOUR 2008.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is proud to announce the inclusion of Renaissance man TRICKY to the 2008 line-up. After gaining prominence with a debut album that all but defined the trip-hop genre, TRICKY has come to be recognised as one of the vanguards of a new musical revolution. Influenced as much by torchlight jazz as the beats of hip-hop, his style has literally opened the door to numerous artists that fill the electronica landscape today. His debut album, Maxinquaye (named after his mother, Maxine Quaye), was a darkly melodic and intoxicatingly sexy masterpiece. TRICKY’s forthcoming Australian tour coincides with the release of the album Knowle West Boy, arguably one of the most diverse album of his career. The mercurial and enigmatic TRICKY will be a force to be reckoned with at SPLENDOUR 08.

Describing their sound as "Upper West Side Soweto," New York City's VAMPIRE WEEKEND mixes preppy, well-read indie rock with joyful, Afro-pop-inspired melodies and rhythms. Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio, Rostam Batmanglij, and Chris Tomson formed the band early in 2006, when they were finishing up their studies at Columbia University. Taking their name from a movie Koenig made during his freshman year, the band started out by playing gigs at the university's literary societies and at parties. Word spread about VAMPIRE WEEKEND’s unique sound and lyrics buoyed by the band's self-released EPs, which they recorded in locations spanning their Columbia dorm rooms to a family barn. The buzz around the band reached a peak and in 2007 the New York Times wrote, "Even without an album, Vampire Weekend has made one of the most impressive debuts of the year." In January 2008 XL the band released their first full-length self-titled album. In their first visit to Australia SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is proud to introduce you to the delights of VAMPIRE WEEKEND.

SPLENDOUR organisers are proud to welcome world citizen BEN LEE into the fray. The unstoppable Lee will perform at the event for the very first time and does so off the back of his sixth album Ripe which spawned the hit Love Me Like the World Is Ending. Having spent fully half of his 28 years crafting some of the catchiest tunes to be heard at discriminating radio everywhere, Lee is now poised to reap the same kind of mass appeal around the globe that he's already established here at home where he's taken home four ARIA Awards. Don’t miss BEN LEE as he spreads his message of love at SPLENDOUR 2008.

American indie quartet COLD WAR KIDS will make their SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS debut in 2008. The band started in 2004 in historic downtown Long Beach in guitarist / vocalist Jonnie Russell's apartment above the restaurant Mulberry St. Ristorante (their first EP title). After relocating to California COLD WAR KIDS toured extensively in 2005-2006, which created serious internet buzz amongst the blogging community. The band released two more EPs, With Our Wallets Full and Up in Rags in 2006. In the summer of 2006, they signed to Downtown Records (home to Gnarls Barkley, Art Brut) and released their debut LP Robbers & Cowards that spawned the single Hang Me Up to Dry. Live they have a reputation for giving it their all and give it all they will at SPLENDOUR 2008.

Barry Fratelli, Jon Fratelli and Mince Fratelli are THE FRATELLIS and they join the SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS line-up for 2008. THE FRATELLIS are an award-winning alternative rock band from Scotland and were discovered by their manager Tony Fratelli in McChuills Bar, Glasgow and signed by Fallout Records after just 9 gigs. The Fratellis self titled debut EP was released in 2006, and led the music bible NME to run a two-page feature on band proclaiming them "the best new band in Britain’. Costello Music was the bands debut album and was released in 2006 charting at number two in the UK album charts for three weeks. The success of the album led to THE FRATELLIS winning the BRIT award for Best British Breakthrough Act in 2007, an award that was voted for by BBC Radio One listeners. With a new album, Here We Stand in the can and due for release in June, THE FRATELLIS are sure to make their presence felt at SPLENDOUR 08.

All the way from the UK, and on the back of their successful March tour, SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS welcomes a band that sound like they’re from down under. THE WOMBATS were a joke they didn’t want anyone to find funny. They were enrolled in Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts (LIPA). But it wasn't too long before Liverpool had to start taking THE WOMBATS very seriously indeed. Ditching the sanatorium moods and comedy outfits they set about playing their infectious punk pop deviance around Liverpool and beyond. By the release of third single Backfire At The Disco in April 2007 the band not only gained major video rotation on MTV2 for their rip-off of Cliff Richard's 'Wired For Sound' promo, but also became the first officially unsigned act to sell out Liverpool's Carling Academy and have thus been declared fully-fledged local heroes. Their debut album A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation has received cracking reviews everywhere and the band has a growing legion of fans. Jesters, ostriches, madmen, rollerskates, strippers, lesbians, chart hits, boys, girls and cuddly marsupials. You have to wonder – what would Paul McCartney have made of what he's spawned?

PNAU have come of age with their third self-titled album. The duo of Nick Littlemore and Pete Mayes, who have often been considered the enfant terribles of the Australian music community, have won the respect of their peers and the loyalty of their fans by consistently producing simple, intelligent hooks, fat sounds and awesome imagery. On Pnau not only will you hear Nick’s vocal talents, you’ll also hear their work with Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson – a match made in heaven, as well as Fabian ‘Mr Oizo’ Feadz of Ed Banger fame worked closely with the band on their impossibly catchy first single release Wild Strawberries. If debut album Sambanova was an ass-grab, and follow up album Again was a casual fling, then PNAU is a love affair that will endure. This is dance floor PNAU as you’ve ever known them, only better. Much, much, better. Catch them if you can at SPLENDOUR 08.

U.K folk pop singer LAURA MARLING joins SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS for the very first time. Hearing LAURA MARLING sing, it is hard to believe how young she is – just eighteen years old. Having been compared to her folk heroes Joni Mitchell and Carole King, as well as Kate Bush, her deft, cool phrasing is suggestive of someone who has a story to tell, and knows how to tell it. Similarly, her lyrics run deep: there is love and romance (of course), but Marling also explores loss, grief and mental illness with startling insight. It’s little wonder that Laura Marling has attracted so much attention already. In eight months she's been on nine separate tours, opening for Jamie T and Devendra Banhart. A breathtaking appearance on 'Later…' led even Jools Holland to whisper to Marling that her performance was 'absolutely amazing.' Her debut Alas I Cannot Swim features warm, sweet arrangements for guitar, trumpet, brushed drums and even a male choir, and is infused with a real intimacy. It's quite a thing to aim for - but as you'll hear at SPLENDOUR 08, LAURA MARLING is no ordinary artist, let alone teenager. Hers is a talent to treasure.

Since their last studio album Vision Valley it could be easy to think THE VINES have been cooling their heels. Not so. THE VINES have nearly finished mixing their forthcoming album with producer Rob Schnapf (who produced their albums Highly Evolved and Winning Days) and by all preliminary reports, it’s freaking amazing. They also hit Austin, Texas South by South West for their first US shows in four years and played sold out show at New York's Bowery Ballroom and the Troubadour in LA in March. Their blistering performances, where they showcased many of their new songs, sparked glowing reviews. The Vines will release their new single He’s A Rocker on June 28. This is the first single from their much-anticipated fourth album, which will be released on Ivy League Records in July. They were the mystery act at Splendour 2006. Now they return as a marquee act at SPLENDOUR 08.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS welcomes the return of THE GRATES. They scored legions of fans with their breakthrough album Gravity Won’t Get You High. Now THE GRATES are currently in the studio recording their sophomore album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with producer Peter Katis (Interpol, Tokyo Police Club) an album the band is looking to capture something of the Flaming Lips’ sense of whimsy and grandness with a fuzzpop edge of Weezer’s Pinkerton album. Their new album is the culmination of a band with two years of solid, heavy touring under their belt, with a confidence that is born from more than 200 shows – from 16,000 people singing every word at Splendour In The Grass to their sold out Winter Wonderland tour, to their numerous overseas jaunts. With a brand new single due for release in June and the new album due out in August through Dew Process, THE GRATES are destined to win hearts at SPLENDOUR 08.

When OPERATOR PLEASE took to the SPLENDOUR stage in 2007 people knew whom they were. Now people REALLY know who they are courtesy of some seriously catchy tunes, most of which are played on radio and television everywhere, and a high profile award or two. Not bad for five kids who met in high school after a reconnaissance mission by vocalist / guitarist Amandah Wilkinson (to fill numbers for a band competition), collated their collective musical quirks and somehow made the incongruous concoction work. The rest, as they say, is history as is their little song about ping-pong. Bringing the concept of ‘all ages’ back with a vengeance, don’t miss the coolest kids on the block when they perform at SPLENDOUR 08.

In their first Australian festival appearance the SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS crew is proud to announce the inclusion of US outfit BAND OF HORSES. Released in March of 2006, their debut album Everything All the Time made good on the promise hinted at in their early shows and demos. The band went from early shows opening for friends Iron & Wine, to playing on The Late Show with David Letterman with the album well received critically. BAND OF HORSES’ current album Cease To Begin goes one step further with its emotional complexity. And the album’s opener, the soaring, anthemic “Is There a Ghost” shows the band, together, at the height of their considerable powers. In a performance not to be missed, be sure to catch the tenderhearted indie rock act that is BAND OF HORSES at SPLENDOUR 08.

Dubbed Australia’s answer to Soulwax, VAN SHE is gearing for what is set to be a huge 2008. Having dropped their street track Cat & The Eye which set them up to play the live support fiddle for Daft Punk, Operator Please & Pnau, the Sydney 4-piece are ready to merge their indie-club following and sweaty nightclub dwellers. Having taken over the airwaves under the DJ guise of Van She Tech with their remix of Utah Saints – Something Good, those explorers of cosmic rock VAN SHE are back in their live set up and set to present their first official single Strangers – taken from their forthcoming debut album titled V to be released August 08. The seeds of VAN SHE’s debut record were sewn in between tour dates and the various remixes with the band working with acclaimed English producer Jim Abbiss whose previous work includes Arctic Monkeys, Placebo & Ladytron. The result is a beautiful, confident & a spacey modern rock album.. Make sure you catch VAN SHE at SPLENDOUR 08 as they begin to fulfill their promise as the band to watch in 2008.

Deliciously catchy outfit THE PANICS are set to make their SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS debut. Not quite dance, not quite pop, and totally infectious, the lead track from their award winning album Get Us Home is followed by nine other songs, including first single Don’t Fight It that keep up the quality to the last note. It’s since been a slow and steady build for THE PANICS. Since forming in Perth, big things have been predicted for the band. After being spotted playing in a pub by Happy Mondays’ Gaz Whelan and Pete Carroll, following The Mondays’ performance at The Big Day Out in 2000, they were signed to their UK/Australian littleBIGMAN records label. After a stream of quality EPs and albums the long player Cruel Guards does not flinch at its up-front boldness and ambition. National youth network triple j bestowed it the J Award for best release of 2007. And the accolades haven’t stopped there. THE PANICS are set to inspire at SPLENDOUR 08.

Four best friends from Perth – singer/guitarist Daniel Sanders, guitarist Zoran Trivic, bassist Brad Campbell and drummer Rob Nassif – make up the super hot band that is GYROSCOPE. Joining the SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS line-up for the first time, the band do so on the back of a cracking year so far. Their third album, Breed Obsession debuted at # 1 on the ARIA Album chart. Breed Obsession’s beauty is in its subtlety and complexity. From the standout piano-driven first single Snakeskin, to the intricate electronica-tinged 1981 and personal, anthemic Australia, GYROSCOPE have pushed far beyond the infectious and intelligent pop-rock of their breakthrough 2006 album Are You Involved? Guaranteed to crowd please, don’t miss them at SPLENDOUR 08.

Canadian electronic whiz kids MSTRKRFT (read as "Master-kraft") are set to carve it up in the Mix Up tent at SPLENDOUR 08. They formed in 2005, the brainchild of Jesse F Keeler and Al. P, and their first single Easy Love, was released in 2006. They released their second single, Work On You, which in contrast to the Easy Love music video, featured animated robots similar to those found in classic cartoons. MSTRKRFT released their first LP, The Looks in early 2007 and although The Looks is MSTRKRFT's first album featuring original content, the band has created remixes from a variety of other artists ranging from Buck 65 to The Kills to Death from Above 1979. No stranger to music festivals, in 2007 MSTRKRFT appeared at the WEMF World Electronic Music Festival one of the genre's most prestigious events.

LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION is the name of the new musical venture by ex-Test Icicle Devonte Hynes. Dev Hynes is the genial creative force behind LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION. Still only 21, Dev was born in Houston but his family moved around a lot when he was a child - from Texas to Edinburgh, eventually settling in Essex. As a six-year-old Dev would follow his big sister everywhere, which is how he came to play the piano - she was taking lessons and he'd go with her. Three years later he started learning the cello, and by the age of 12 drums had entered the picture. Dev's early teens were spent teaching himself the guitar and logging time as a bassist in "bad hardcore punk bands". After finishing school he upped sticks to London, which is still home. The sound of LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION’s debut album Falling off The Lavender Bridge however, was shaped thousands of miles away in Omaha, Nebraska. Backed by an informal band that included guest vocalist Emmy The Great - not to mention moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall - Dev was able to furnish his gently humorous, openhearted songs with an unaffected warmth. On an LP packed with autobiographical numbers and a flood of sounds that defy categorisation, LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION makes his Australian touring debut at SPLENDOUR 08.

Described as 'What Neil Young & Crazy Horse would sound like if they surfed'. North Coast outfit THE BROWN BIRDS FROM WINDY HILL is a group of surfer musicians who have just released their album Three Sails To The Wind. Featuring well-known surfer, artist and performer Andrew Kidman, the band includes Mark Sutherland who first played on The Val Dusty Experiment album that scored the surf film Litmus. Also featuring on this recording is Neal Purchase Jnr. Neal and Andrew Kidman spent two weeks in New Zealand writing material and working on the sketches for this recording, which is a bona fide beauty. Songs from Three Sails To The Wind have since featured in the Patrick Trefz film Thread and the Mick Waters film Believe. In their first appearance at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS these mellow tunes are sure to hit the spot.

SCRIBE, the shining star of New Zealand's much-celebrated young hip-hop scene, will deliver the goods at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 08. His debut album The Crusader (released 2003) made SCRIBE the first Kiwi artist to ever simultaneously hold the number one spots on the album and singles chart in his homeland. The album is now five times platinum in New Zealand having sold 65 000 albums to date in the three months since release. His second studio album titled Rhyme Book was released in Australia on 29 September 2007 and features collaborations with New York hip hop artist Talib Kweli (of Reflection Eternal and Black Star fame) on the track Be Alright and his equally talented cousin Tyra Hammond on the cranking third single Say It Again. As popular with critics as he is with his growing legion of fans, NZ’s best rapper is on track for world domination.

Leeds lads THE MUSIC will return to Australia on the back of a brand new album (due for release mid year) called Strength In Numbers. Their career kicked off with a vengeance. THE MUSIC’s debut album established them among the top contenders as the UK’s best new band. The band -- Rob Harvey (vocals), Phil Jordan (drums), Adam Nutter (guitar) and Stuart Coleman (bass) -- were barely 18 years old when their eponymously-titled album rocketed into the UK chart at number four at the start of September 2002. Not since the mid-Nineties had a young British band set such a meaningful agenda for the generation to have emerged post-Britpop. In autumn 2004, they released their second album Welcome to the North. After an extended hiatus the band spent 2007 recording their third album with producers Flood (Depeche Mode, The Killers, U2, Nine Inch Nails) and Paul Hartnoll from Orbital. With a burgeoning fan base and an awesome reputation for live brilliance, THE MUSIC will strike more than musical chords at SPLENDOUR 08.

Brisbane based musical collective THE GIN CLUB will bring their eclectic mix of rock, pop, folk, blues, country, psych, prog, slowcore, and everything in between to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS. Since their formation in 2003 they have toured Australia, Canada and New Zealand, played with acts as diverse as Paul Kelly, The Drones, Tim Rogers, Iron & Wine, Lambchop, Midlake and Laura Veirs, and released three albums to critical acclaim. Their most recent release is Junk, a double album featuring 26 original songs. Music critic Noel Mengel, writing in the Courier Mail, gave the album a 4.5/5, whilst local street press Time Off gave it album of the week and 5 out of five. “With this third album, they’ve harnessed all that creative energy and ambition and crafted a recording with all the beauty and terror and inexorable force of rock music at its finest. Don’t miss it. **** 1⁄2. You heard it here! Don’t miss THE GIN CLUB at SPLENDOUR 08.

In addition to a stellar line-up of music talent, our usual features will return to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 08. The G.W MCLENNAN THEATRE stage will be back along with the HEALING ELEMENT, a haven filled with alternative therapy and lifestyle outlets, market stalls, global food fair, bonfires plus a wine bar. The TIPI CIRCLE will return to its new home in the forest and punters can also expect the return of the SPLENDID LOUNGE BAR, kooky iconoclastic performances and a smorgasbord of visual art.

In exciting news SPLENDOUR organisers can confirm the return of the GREEN TICKET which this year will go one step further in tackling climate change. Last year 31% of SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS patrons took up the option to offset their average travel emissions neutralising over 860 tonnes of carbon. This year the GREEN TICKET option will allow punters to neutralise their average carbon emissions over a 48-hour period (not just their travel emissions). Australians generate on average a total of 28 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions or 77kg a day. Each individual GREEN TICKET this year will neutralise 144kg of carbon (i.e. covering two days) making the ticket holder climate neutral for the duration of the event. Our goal is to make Splendour 100% carbon neutral and we believe we can go close to achieving this goal in 2008 with the support of our punters. To find out more about becoming carbon neutral visit www.climatefriendly.com.

In keeping with SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS tradition, each year event organisers handpick a local community organisation to be the beneficiary of funds raised through a $2.00 (per ticket) contribution from every event ticket sold. This year the Splendour crew will split proceeds of these contributions between the Byron Bay Hospital and WIRES Northern Rivers. The Byron Bay Hospital will use their share of funds raised to purchase some much needed medical equipment, while WIRES (Wildlife Information and Rescue Service) will use their contribution to fund an awareness program designed to ensure the preservation of the native Wildlife.
